Rather than food shortages and occasional periods of intense physical activity, many people now live with constant access to food, ultra-processed meals, sedentary lifestyles, chronic stress, inadequate sleep, and a higher toxic load from smoking, alcohol, pollution, and other environmental exposures.
Nutrition, regular movement, restorative sleep, stress, relationships, major life events, and exposure to toxins all become part of the environment that influences gene expression. Your body is shaped less by one meal, one walk, or one difficult day than by what happens again and again over months, years, and decades. Your genes remain an important part of your health story, but they are not the entire story. You cannot choose the DNA you inherited, and lifestyle cannot remove every genetic risk. You can, however, choose a lifestyle that influences many of the conditions in which your genes are expressed.
